Simona Halep secures her 30th in Madrid in straight sets against Coco Gauff despite trailing 1-4 in the second set

Simona Halep has safely orchestrated into the quarter finals to face the highest seed remaining Ons Jabeur without a set dropped following another impressive straight sets win.

Halep’s 6-4 6-4 win over Coco Gauff was her 30th at the Madrid Open for the two time champion and is now 7-1 against players who have been seeded in 2022 with the only defeat coming to Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells.

It was another impressive performance from Simona under the roof this time at the Caja Magica. As tests go it was probably her toughest, there was a period during the second set where Gauff began to impose herself into the match with an injection of pace and power and playing more aggressively on the baseline. It worked well for the American who constructed points well and would move up the court really finding some joy with that forehand down the line.

Despite this lead there was a feeling in the air that this wouldn’t be plain sailing for the American who despite this step-up in performance during the second set struggled to see off a spirited and in-form Simona Halep. Maybe as well it was on her mind that Coco has not won this season from a set down and is now 0-7 in 2022 after losing the first set.

From 1-4 down the Romanian reeled off 5 games in a row to win 6-4 6-4, both sets taking 39 minutes each and setting up a meeting in the final eight with Ons Jabeur. Halep’s record against seeded players continues to be a big positive this season and is two wins away from equalling Petra Kvitova’s record on the WTA tour of 32 wins at the Mutua Madrid Open, a 33rd would mean winning the title but we have some time until we potentially begin thinking about that.
