A dereliction of duty? IOC silence and ITF’s pathetic 18 word statement highlights their lack of a backbone with Peng Shuai still missing.

In February the city of Beijing will host the Winter Olympics, at the moment professional tennis player Peng Shuai is missing in China following allegations she made on the Weibo against a former PRC (People’s Republic of China) President.

Since then her account has been removed as has all content online in China relating to her name. Concerns continue to grow as no one in tennis has heard from her.

WTA CEO Steve Simon has tried to reach out to no response and has confirmed the WTA is considering moving its tournaments out of China until they are satisfied she is safe, well and her accusations are being listened to.

We have seen statements from the WTA, ATP, Serena, Djokovic, Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open etc.. the list goes on but where are the International Federations?

ITF – International Tennis Federation

One word, pathetic. No backbone at all, it’s taken two weeks for them publish 18 words. I think David Haggerty and the big names in charge should be embarrassed, her is the statement (more of a sentence)…

Peng Shuai is missing, 18 words.

IOC – International Olympic Committee

Where are they? Beijing is hosting the Winter Olympics in less than 16 weeks and a prominent sports figure in China, Tennis and former Olympian is missing and they’ve not said a word.

Why not? The Olympic Charter says:

β€œThe goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.”

Stop hiding.

The latest update on Saturday is the surfacing of videos of Peng Shuai on Twitter. These were posted by accounts that Twitter ‘warns’ at China state-affiliated media – why are these not being posted by anyone else?

I won’t be posting the videos as the validity of them is questioned, the videos show someone talking about the 20th of November and the other shows Peng Shuai in a building but leading up to this video the person operating the video zooms in on the date posted on an A4 piece of paper on the front door, because that’s normal.

Steve Simon the CEO of the WTA has once again questioned the authenticity of this:

Steve Simon has also written a letter to the Chinese Ambassador saying without the requests being honoured they will pull all their tournaments and business out of China.

This cannot go quiet. This has hit home for many, highlighting the issues in many countries and turning a blind eye can’t go on.
