A former world number one and Grand Slam doubles champion Peng Shuai has gone missing.
In the last week or so momentum led by fans and players has seen Peng’s story hit international news. Twitter is blocked from public use in China however they do have Weibo over there which is a similar platform.
Peng Shuai posted on Weibo an allegation that Zhang Gaoli forced her into sexual relations with him, Zhang is a former Vice Premier of Chinese Communist Party. This post was screenshot by many but the Chinese state took it down in a matter of minutes, even if you searched for her name on Weibo she has been wiped from the internet, there is no trace.
In the last few days momentum has gained and posts have been shared by top professionals in the sport and the WTA have released multiple statements.
The first one:
Since then Chinese State Media have released an email from Peng Shuai but it’s authenticity is questioned, why is there a cursor in the email?
Steve Simon has since responded…
There are growing concerns for Peng Shuai and her family and we hope the continued pressure continues to mount on China.
It is fantastic to see the tennis world come together as it always does but this cannot go silent.
The ATP, WTA and ITF should cut ties with China until further notice. Whether this is sponsorship or tournaments a stance must be made. I hope this continues to reach the wider sporting world and puts more pressure on China ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
