Outside of Rome and Paris top ten wins have been tough to come by for Iga Swiatek, how will she get on at her WTA Finals debut?

By about three years Iga Swiatek is the youngest player in the WTA Finals for 2021.

It’s easy to forget it was just a couple of months ago she turned 20 and it would be far to say she is searching for a bit more consistency still. At the same time with points to defend and her tennis this season she has done very well to qualify for the WTA Finals where she will be one of the debutants.

The next step is finding more consistency across the calendar, I hope she plays well in Guadalajara but it will be a big test. This year she has won the title in Adelaide and the Rome title and we know how that went…

In both of these title runs she did defeat Krejcikova and Bencic but neither were ranked top ten at the time but outside of Rome and Roland Garros last year the 20 year old hasn’t had those big wins. I was a bit surprised when I learnt that, two at Roland Garros and two in Rome.

That is part of the problem, outside of Roland Garros this year and last year and this year in Rome she hasn’t made the final eight of any other major or WTA 1000 event.

These wins have been on clay courts and this is where her best tennis has been played winning 81% of her career matches on the surface where as hard courts is just 63% with 35 wins and 21 defeats with this year almost being 50/50 at 19-9.

I have no doubts that over the next couple of years we will see Iga go from strength to strength on the tour. She always comes across as a player who has her feet on her ground and doesn’t get caught up in much at all which I like.

Even with her success in Paris last year and the disruption to the tour over the last 20 months it is still amazing to think she only recently turned 20.

How do I think she will get on? I do think she has the game to contend here, she has won a major but this was on clay. It isn’t a season defining tournament for her but a learning curve for next year. We have seen some tour finals appearances really hit players but this should be a nice way to end the season for Iga.
