The week in Transylvania is coming to end, quite appropriately on Halloween and even in this late stage of the season there is a lot to play for and a lot riding on the final.
It will be the top seed Simona Halep against the second seed Anett Kontaveit who has been in exceptional form over the last few months. Anett is into her sixth final of the year having won four titles, one of which was shared in Melbourne as the final was cancelled.
What is on the line?
- Simona Halep is aiming to win a title for her ninth consecutive year on the tour
- Anett Kontaveit is one win away from qualifying for the WTA Finals in Guadalajara
- A win for Simona Halep in the Cluj-Napoca final sends Ons Jabeur to the WTA Finals
It could not be closer.
The cut off for the WTA Finals is 3061 points, going into the final it is:
Jabeur – 3020
Kontaveit – 2961
How many points will Anett add if she wins Sunday’s final? 100. It will such a cruel ending for Jabeur who has been injured of late as this race goes down to the wire.
Anett has found some form recently which no one has matched. It is her fourth final since August and she brought in Dmitry Tursunev to her team and has gone from strength to strength with wins over Kvitova and Muguruza in this time.
For Simona Halep this is a wonderful way to close out a very tough season suffering with injury she hasn’t been able to build momentum and has come to this final in form.
6-1 6-2, 6-4 6-2, 6-1 6-1 & 6-0 6-1, not a bad run of results to be back in a WTA final. It is soo good to watch Simona in this form, with respect it hasn’t been the toughest of tests but she has got the job done time and time again. This was set to be her final bow in 2021 but Halep has since confirmed she will be in Linz if she is feeling good.
How will Sunday’s finale with soo much riding on it go?
Simona Halep leads the head to head at 3-0 with Anett and there has been some friendly banter on social media from Ons Jabeur this week and she will be hoping for a fourth win for Simona Halep…
