There was a statement of intent from Shelby who was hitting the ball with an insane amount of power as she raced to a 2-0 lead and the beginning of the match looked like being a difficult encounter for Emma. The power of Shelby quickly went from impressive to messy, the errors snuck into her game and it became a runaway for Emma.
0-2 down to winning the first set 6-2, could she continue her fine form and keep the momentum going?
It got better and better, Emma ended up extending her run of games from 6 to 11 and led the American 6-2 5-0 and a game away from the quarter finals.
To the delight of the crowd the American got on the board and then it became the question of, can Emma serve it out? It was natural for nerves to settle in, Shelby was hitting freely for the first time since the opening five minutes and saw two break points.
Emma reset back to deuce and won three consecutive points with a good serve and a finish at the next to set up match point after just 62 minutes.
The first went but Emma never looked in a panic, she was calm as collective on the biggest court in the world serving for her place in the final eight.
An minute game but she served it out in 66 minutes. 6-2 6-1, early on she was 0-2 0-40 down but recovered!
