Having missed three months of tennis and her chance to defend her Wimbledon title the 2 time major champion Simona Halep now faces a race against time to be ready for the US Open.
Halep was forced out with a calf tear picked up in Rome up a set and level at 3-3 with Kerber and only in Canada recently.
Simona opened with a defeat but a positive performance against Danielle Collins in three sets, in Cincinnati it was better this time a three set win over Magda Linette but hours before her match with Jessica Pegula the Romanian pulled out with an right abductor tear.
Since this we have seen Simona Halep at the airport and question is will she be ready for the US Open?
For one reason or another since she made the semi-finals in 2015 it hasn’t happened for her in New York with just one win in her last three appearances at Flushing Meadows. What will be a big incentive for Halep will be the chance to pick up points.
Her time off from tennis with the calf injury meant her run of 373 consecutive weeks ranked in the top 10 did come to an end and a good and healthy run at the US Open would bring her back in.
Consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the WTA ranking:
Martina Navratilova – 1000
Chris Evert – 746
Steffi Graf – 625
Gabriela Sabatini – 508
Pam Shriver – 458
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario – 429
Hana Mandlikova – 421
Simona Halep – 373
Lindsay Davenport – 333
Conchita Martinez – 319
Just to put it into context, it is the first time since 12th of January 2014 that Simona Halep has not been ranked inside the top 10 in the world.
Simona is in a race against time, but is there enough time to be ready? I don’t think so, I think it would be better to keep herself ready for Indian Wells and see out her season on the hard courts.
