Wimbledon Wildcards (so far…)
There are some names still to be announced for a Wimbledon wildcard but between the wildcards so far there are seven Wimbledon singles titles between two and those two are Andy Murray and five time champion Venus Williams.
Other wildcards include:
Samantha Murray Sharan
I am excited to see Jodie Burrage in the draw, she deserves it. She impressed me at the Battle of the Brit events and the 22 year old has had a torrid time with injuries over the last few years with three ankle operations.
Another name I am pleased to see is Emma Raducanu, I thought it must have been a typo when I saw she was in qualifying as a wildcard but she has been upgraded to a main draw wildcard following a win over Timea Babos. The 18 year old also impressed during the Battle of the Brit events and will be making her Grand Slam debut.
Nadal takes himself out of London & Olympics!
Rafael Nadal’s efforts on clay which didn’t end with a Roland Garros title mean it is unlikely we will see the Spaniard until around the US Open as he will be bid for his 21st Grand Slam title having pulled out of Wimbledon and the Olympics.
In a long post on social media the Spaniard said:
Naomi Osaka withdraws from Wimbledon
After what happened in Paris, Naomi Osaka has decided to continue her break from tennis and spend time with Family and Friends and will not be playing at Wimbledon this year.
The four time major champion made an announcement through her team and will not be back in action until the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
The statement read:
“Naomi won’t be playing Wimbledon this year. She is taking some personal time with friends and family. She will be ready for the Olympics and is excited to play in front of her home fans.”
I hope Naomi is ok and we see her back soon!
Kiki Bertens to retire!
Some surprising news but at the end of the year Kiki Bertens who has been struggling with some injuries of late will be retiring from tennis.
I saw Kiki lift the Madrid Open title back in 2019 down at the Caja Magica and the 29 year old said this on her retirement:
David Goffin to miss Wimbledon!
Unfortunately the Belgian has been struck by injury he announced on Friday. Having been hit by injury in Monte-Carlo it is an right ankle injury this week in Halle which has forced him out of the competition.
Dominic Thiem withdraws from Tokyo Olympics
Dominic Thiem is the latest player to announce his withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympics, in a lengthy post on social media the Austrian said he does not feel ready to play in Tokyo.
Del Potro back on the court!
Some good news to end with is that Juan Martin Del Potro who does have Tokyo in his sights is back playing on the court with a brace on but to see the Tower of Tandill hitting that forehand once again and hopefully back on the match court soon!
