Simona Halep produces comeback to see off Iga Swiatek for her 100th Grand Slam win

When Iga Swiatek wins a set at a Grand Slam it usually means a quick evenings work for the Polish teenager. Coming into the match the teenager won 20 consecutive Grand Slam sets on her way to the fourth round.

Simona Halep saw some incredible opportunities in the opening set of their encounter on Rod Laver Arena to break the teenager and find a lead in the match at 3-3 but from a 6 minute game to losing the set 6 minutes later as Iga stood strong to hold at 4-3, the frustration spilt over for Halep who was broken to love and quickly lost the set losing 11 of the last 12 points.

Surprisingly the defending Roland Garros champion opted to head off court after just 38 minutes and on return this seemed to completely break her momentum. Simona Halep held serve and began to pull away taking a 3-0 lead and going onto the take the second set 6-1. It was wild from the teenager who continued to hit error after error off the forehand as the match was tied at a set a piece.

The dominance from the former world number one continued extending her lead to 2-0 in the third set and looking to really pull away. Credit to Swiatek she did come back into the match and level at 2-2 but Simona did pull away again and didn’t look back.

There were some questions at 5-4 whether nerves would come into play but it proved to be a solid performance from the former finalist who has now set up a meeting with Serena Williams who she described after her match as:

“Legend, she’s the best.”
