Deadly Daniil strikes again!

Oh yes, it does not get much better than that!

I said on Saturday morning I felt like we would see Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev prevail in their semi-finals and they delivered.

Saturday night entertainment from Daniil and Rafa was sensational, there was not too much to separate them.

Daniil has been deadly all week and I couldn’t be happier for him going into the final unbeaten when on debut last year he lost all of his round robin matches.

I did worry a little bit when he was a set down that maybe that feeling of what happened last year from 5-1 and match point up in the round robin crept in.

Second set we saw more of the Russian impose himself as he took a 4-1 lead but was pegged back but held it together magnificently to win in the second set tie-break.

The way he composed himself throughout the match was exceptional. He pretty much raced through his service games in under two minutes but asked more questions of the Nadal service game with his average time on serve being around six minutes.

He is like a dog with a bone, once he gets going he is relentless and his presence on the baseline is phenomenal as is his coverage around the court.

In the third he continued to step up and throughout the match was creeping forward on Nadal’s serve and paint the baseline time and time again. He got the break to lead 4-2 and didn’t look back going onto win 3-6 7-6 6-3 an ending the Spaniard’s chance for another year of winning the ATP Finals.
