Sebastian Korda to face his idol Rafael Nadal as dream run in Paris continues

Roland Garros continues to deliver incredible stories and Sebastian Korda is another player on a dream run which is not over yet.

The name Korda sounds familiar in mens tennis. Sebastian’s Dad, Petr is a former Australian Open singles and doubles champion and Roland Garros finalist at both events and reached a height of world number two before Sebastian was born.

Sebastian only turned 20 a couple of months ago, the 6’5″ American is ranked outside the top 200 at 213 coming into Roland Garros and his dream run has been magnificent to watch.

It has been a long week for Korda who for the first time in his career came through qualifying at a major. It was just a few weeks ago he made his Grand Slam debut in New York as a wildcard but lost to Denis Shapovalov in four sets.

Qualifying was a bit of a breeze for the American who didn’t drop a set before making his Roland Garros debut. He had some tricky opening matches, Andreas Seppi is known for being quite stubborn on the clay but the rhythm and speed of Korda proved too much.

In his second round match he had to be a bit more patient and dumped out one of the biggest names in mens American tennis in John Isner winning 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4 against the 21st seed before going onto beat Martinez Portero in straight sets on Friday.

His team have thoroughly enjoyed his run in Paris but his physio might just be a bit worried about a bet they had. If Korda came through qualifying and made the third round they had a bet that his physio would swim the Charles Bridge in the Czech Republic and reminded him following his win over Isner…

He’s dream run continues and now a real dream comes true as on Sunday he will play against his idol Rafael Nadal on Court Philippe Chatrier.

“He’s my biggest idol. Everything he does is perfect. I even named my cat after him. That explains how much I love him.”

He even had a photo with him many years ago…
