Simona Halep wins in Rome ahead of trip to Paris

For the first time and at third attempt, Simona Halep has won her first title in Rome.

Not many players have completed the heavy schedule of Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros titles in their careers but Simona Halep who first made the semi-finals there back in 2013 finally has her hands on the title she craved!

The title in Rome means Simona Halep is now joint second on the list of active players with clay court titles, Serena Williams has 13 where as sister Venus and Simona Halep have 9.

Simona turned up to Rome in good form and good spirits. The Romanian of course didn’t head to New York and that became obvious in July announcing her plans to play in Palermo (pulled out) and Prague, winning the title at the latter.

Something with Halep seems a bit more relaxed now, I thought the way she struggled against Muguruza in the semi-final but had it on her racket showed the mood she is in and I think having Darren Cahill back in her team following lockdown really will help.

It wasn’t the ending to the match Simona would have hoped for winning on retirement as Karolina Pliskova was forced to retire mid-match for the first time in her career.

In heading to Roland Garros the Romanian could not have asked for better preparation and will be the top seed at Roland Garros without defending champion Ash Barty there!
