Laura Robson knocks out Kim Clijsters and Li Na on route to the fourth round at the US Open

2012 was a special year for Tennis especially British Tennis. One of the stories of the year was Laura Robson.

Having made her First WTA Final and then winning Olympic Silver with Andy Murray in the mixed doubles the Brit then went to another level in New York.

Laura opened her campaign in the same section as fellow Brit Heather Watson. Laura defeated American qualifier Samantha Crawford with a 6-4 7-6 victory to begin her week at Flushing Meadows.

Next up for the 18 year old was a player playing her last tournament and that was former champion, former world number one and 23rd seed Kim Clijsters.

Laura did a job holding serve in her opening game from 0-30 but the break points did come for Kim in the third and a stunning forehand down the line converted the break as Kim took a 4-1 lead.

At 2-5 Robson was serving to stay in the set and did a very good job of that. The Brit really began to open up her lefty forehand and pushing the Belgian around the getting the break of serve back but once again serving to stay in the set. Another big hold came from 15-30 to be level at 5-5.

Set point came for Kim on Robson serve but a big ace out-wide saved that and two went to a tie-break. At 4-4 Robson went big on serve and return to see set points and sealed the opener with another big serve!

Kim broke early again in the second set but it was short lived as Laura battled hard from 1-2 to 3-2.

The match continued to be extremely close as Kim saved break points in the sixth game but couldn’t upset the rhythm of Robson.

The second set pretty much stayed with serve until the twelfth game when Laura came up with an excellent slice at the net to see two match points!

Kim the champion she is saved both forcing another tie-break!

Once again it was extremely close between the two players but at 5-5 the Brit sent a monster of a forehand up the line to see a third match point!

The big serve did the job once again for Laura and the two shared a hug at the net with Robson winning her biggest match to date in what was Kim’s last match on tour!

Since then it has been a struggle for Laura with multiple wrist injuries and I hope we do see her back on the court one day. Kim on the other hand return in 2020 almost 8 years after her last match!

Following her win against Kim the Brit was at it once again this time against 9th seed and two time Grand Slam champion Li Na!

Laura won the first set but lost the second on a tie-breaker. In the third it was pretty one sided from the British teenager who won 6-4 6-7 6-2 to seal another big win.

With two major champions falling the run of Laura did come to an end against Sam Stosur. The seventh seed from Australia was in a rampant mood as she hadn’t dropped a set on route to the fourth round and saw off Laura 4-6 4-6.

It was a truly remarkable run from Laura and as I said earlier on in the piece I just hope one day we see her back playing world class tennis once more!
