The return of normal tennis is still far off but across the world tennis has been returning and we will just have to get used to a new format for now with many countries putting on national tournaments.
Despite no official competition a lot is happening at the moment, a lot is about to change and a lot has been said.
Marion Bartoli slams doubles!
Marion Bartoli has launched an incredible attack on doubles players citing they are paid too much, it shouldn’t be played as much on the tour, they don’t work hard and the money they would get should go to lower ranked singles players in qualifying/challengers/futures etc…
Quite the attack on the doubles players. Marion herself played 199 doubles matches and won 3 WTA titles so will she chip in?
I find it incredible for Marion to say:
I just don’t understand because in doubles, you just don’t make the same effort as a singles player. You don’t practice as much,
Much more was said which you can read below:
Quite incredible to take a swipe at doubles players picking up too much money when they take only less than 20% of what a singles Grand Slam winner makes.
Gaby Dabrowski and Nicolas Mahut have had their say on social media…
LTA confirm National Championships
The National Championships disappeared back in early 2000 but will return this summer in England.
A few competitions have been set up by the LTA which will be held at the National Tennis Centre in July.
The plans are for the tennis to be on an outdoor hard court and shown on the LTA’s social media channels which is a theme across Europe at the moment.
It is open to the 16 highest ranked male and 16 highest ranked female players on the tour in a singles event only for now due to government guidelines.
Djokovic launches Adria Tour
Novak Djokovic has launched a tour to be played across four cities beginning in mid-June.
The Adria Tour will begin in Belgrade before heading to Zadar, Montenegro and Banja Luka taking place on the Saturday/Sunday from mid-June.
There are still details to be found out but it is understood it will be played behind closed doors and it will feature some younger players in different host cities.
Novak Djokovic is confirmed to be joined by Marin Cilic, Borna Coric, Dominic Thiem, Grigor Dimitrov and Alex Zverev so far.
Tennis around the world?
Tennis has been returning in a socially distanced manner all over the world.
Petra Kvitova has been leading in Prague and pulled off this incredible shot against Karolina Muchova…
Dominic Thiem has been out and about as well playing in Austria in a home event winning 6-1 6-2 on his return to tennis against Lucas Miedler.
Patrick Mouratoglou has his Ultimate Tennis Showdown coming soon and so far has Goffin, Fognini, Pouille, Paire, Popyrin, Brown and now Felix Auger-Aliassime in the draw…
Working out with Venus!
Venus has had everyone on her daily workouts and it has been a fantastic watch as she trains and interviews her guests at the same time with the latest high profile tennis player the recently retired Caroline Wozniacki, working out with wine bottles…
It’s the news we want, an update on the calendar isn’t expected till mid-June but there is plenty of noise coming out of different avenues.
- Roland Garros is set to move dates again. It is expected to be moved back by a couple of weeks and is in talks with the ATP, WTA and ITF. Roland Garros tournament director, Guy Forget gave out more information on this – https://tennistalk.co.uk/2020/05/23/ambitious-optimistic-but-many-questions-marks-surround-a-rescheduled-roland-garros/
- US Open announcement is expected in mid-June but it does look likely an event could take place. I still can’t imagine a 23,000 crowd on Arthur Ashe in a few months but we will have to wait and see. More info on the US Open can be found here – https://tennistalk.co.uk/2020/05/15/atp-wta-tour-suspension-extended-an-update-on-the-us-open/
- Madrid? It is looking likely that with Roland Garros being moved back a couple of weeks Madrid Open could take place. Feliciano Lopez the tournament director has confirmed they will be happy to go-ahead without fans!
There are soo many questions and I hope we have answers in June. A few have been talking about the World Tour Finals in London.
The plan from the ATP tour is to play as much as possible in 2020 which could mean playing in December. How would the O2 finals play out in November?
There are no events at the O2 from the 5th-10th of December and 12th-17th of December but it would be impossible to move it to another date at the O2 as the build for the court takes around six days! ATP chairmen did speak about another site but nothing has been communicated yet.
