Gael Monfils wins back to back titles in Rotterdam and in 2020!

As the week has progressed in Rotterdam we have been left with many questions and answers. A question that was tough for the young guys on the tour was how to break down Gael Monfils?

When people talk about Gael Monfils you talk about the incredible ability he has on the court but also his ability to keep rallies going and act like a brick wall.

Many have found that out in Rotterdam this week and in Montpellier last week as he won the title there and was something Felix Auger-Aliassime had to try and find an answer for.

Felix came into the final on a much needed good week following a difficult run of form but he had the look of a dejected figure early on.

The teenager fell down a break and it could have been worse for the Canadian who escaped a 0-40 game but couldn’t make too much of an impressive on the Monfils service games who ran away to take the set 6-2.

Felix returned to serve first in the second and just didn’t look at it, he was broken to love and the forehand was flying all over the place with the Canadian looking to press it too much.

At 2-6 0-2 with no sign of Monfils slowing down it became a job of damage limitations.

As the party looked like coming to a close in Rotterdam the party tricks began to be pulled out of the bag from the Frenchman who broke again and this time at 6-2 4-1 despite some tiredness in his legs was closing in on another title.

The match continued to go with serve until a big moment for Felix who finally broke serve!

Suddenly Felix Auger Aliassime started playing like he was in a final with the best tennis he had produced all afternoon in Rotterdam!

Despite four match points being saved and finding that break late on the Frenchman got the job done! Not only has he won back to back titles in Rotterdam but also in 2020 following his win in Montpellier last week.
