Anything is Pospisil! Daniil Medvedev stunned as Vasek strikes once again!

Daniil Medvedev’s birthday week has not gone to plan. It hasn’t been the best time to celebrate birthdays in Rotterdam following the exit of Hubert Hurkacz yesterday this time the Russian who turned 24 yesterday has crashed out!

Vasek Pospisil has been in very good form over the last few months and it is good to see him bring it into 2020 as well. A week which saw him make the Montpellier final with a win over David Goffin has now seen him see off Daniil Medvedev quite comfortably.

Not many saw it coming and Daniil did have opportunities during the match.

It was the Russian who got the early and immediate break of serve but a loose game which is unusual from him gifted it back to the Canadian. Vasek took some control but a messy game at 5-4 opened up three big break points for Daniil but three aces from Pospisil quickly squandered any opening as he sealed the set.

Pospisil continued to play a fantastic match, he grew as the match went on and became virtually unstoppable on his serve. He served big and went big on his forehand to deter from getting involved in long rallies with the Russian.

There are two sides to every match and Daniil Medvedev did look like a player who hasn’t played in a few weeks and also a player who had been struggling with a Grand Slam hangover.

Daniil just couldn’t find much momentum, whether that had something to do with indoor hard courts but it was similar to his struggles in London performance wise.

Pospisil was armed with maple syrup once again and is into the second round and back inside the top 100!
