Khachanov & Auger Aliassime win important openers in Rotterdam!

Felix Auger Aliassime and Karen Khachanov are safely through to the second round in Rotterdam.

First up was the Canadian lost quite comprehensively to his opponent Jan Lennard Struff quite comprehensively in Sydney a few weeks ago and on the back of an early exit in Melbourne needed the win.

I like what I saw from Felix, he was very quick out of the blocks and seemed in total control as he took the first set. The second set got away from him, having invested soo much in that first set his service games dipped in intensity and it became rushed. The second set got away from him quickly losing it 1-6 and the third couple of have followed suit.

At 1-1 in the final set he continued to lash the ball losing composure and found himself down 0-40 and it felt like this was a save or go home moment. He rallied together and really began to find his forehand which unpredictable during the match but he saw it through to claim an important.

Someone else who claimed an important win yesterday was Grigor Dimitrov and he will play his second Canadian of the week on Wednesday in Felix after defeating Denis Shapovalov on Monday.

Karen Khachanov was up next in Rotterdam. The Russian who has had dip of late and admitted to low confidence in Melbourne showed as Nick Kyrgios said following their matches his “warrior” mentality.

I liked what Karen brought to the court against Fognini.

Fognini as we know can bring some drama with him and as usual he did. He was suffering with some upper leg issue but Karen did his bit well. He didn’t hit the Italian off the court and if he were to be picky he’d probably be looking for more ways to ask questions in the next round.

Khachanov showed in Melbourne his ability to keep the ball in play and keep rallies going and that was pretty much all he had to do against Fognini who created more opportunities than the Russian but squandered more as well.

Overall a good days works for Felix and Karen who recorded some much needed wins!
