The flawless final hour that saw Novak Djokovic dispatch a stubborn Daniil Medvedev

Novak Djokovic just defined what he is all about in 167 minutes of exceptional tennis but the final 60 were flawless.

Novak Djokovic had it on his racket but we know something about Daniil Medvedev is that he never goes away and forced a third set.

Following his win Novak Djokovic had this to say about the Russian:

“Daniil Medvedev is one of the best players in the world and today he showed why.

He is very difficult to break from the baseline.”

Back to that third set.

The momentum was swinging, there was a greater impact coming from the racket of the Russian but Djokovic wouldn’t allow it.

The focus from the Serb had that feeling of, I know I have a fight on my hands right now.

What makes Djokovic so fantastic in these situations is how he blocks it all out.

I thought the way he mixed it up was impeccable, the whole performance in the third set defined his tennis career.

He withstood a barrage of pressure against a player he described as difficult to ‘break from the baseline.’ Novak knew he needed to buy himself some time. We began to see some serve and volley just to stop the rhythm of Daniil’s groundstrokes.

Some of the points they played in this final hour of tennis was breathtaking but the level of the shots Djokovic won were from another planet.

The reactions down break point here…

Have you ever seen anything like it? 3/3 break points saved from Djokovic in that third set, nothing was getting past him.

This just defines his tennis career. A tiny blip and an improving opponent didn’t panic him. He remained focused and flawless in his game plan which he needed to alter but did it without trouble.

99.9% of the time you’d expect a dip from a player in this situation however Novak Djokovic is not your average tennis player.
