Down at the WTA event in Auckland we got the first glimpse of one of the most anticipated doubles teams down under during the new season.
Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki kicked off Monday with a big win in their first match as a doubles team. The two have been best friends on and off the court for many years and in what is Wozniacki’s final run of tournaments finishing in Melbourne the duo got off to a good start.
It took just 70 minutes for them to secure their first win as a pairing defeating Hibino and Ninomiya from Japan 6-2 6-4.
Also in Auckland saw the debut of 15 year old Coco Gauff who impressed in the main draw once again with a straight sets win over Victoria Kuzmova to kick off her week.
Another round one win was claimed by a former Wimbledon finalist. Eugenie Bouchard won her first main draw match in 321 days as she saw off Kirsten Flipkens 7-5 7-5.
Elsewhere in Brisbane there were a few shocks on the cards.
Home favourite, Sam Stosur secured her win as a wildcard with a straight sets win over Angie Kerber.
Last year’s semi-finalist down at Melbourne Park, Danielle Collins handed out a drubbing as the American sped past Elina Svitolina winning 6-1 6-1.
