The only woman’s only tournament in Australia has been shelved to outside courts for three days to accommodate ATP Cup

The world number one and local girl Ash Barty will lead the field at the WTA event in Brisbane as will world number two and three Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova but will not be on centre court for sometime.

2020 sees the inaugural ATP Cup come into play across Perth, Brisbane and Sydney before the knockout stages in Sydney but it comes at a price.

The ATP Cup begins on the 3rd and the WTA event in Brisbane on the 6th. Due to the scheduling of group stage matches in Brisbane taking place from the 3rd to the 9th, it does mean the opening three days of WTA Brisbane will mean no women’s matches will take place on Centre Court.

The top seeds will receive a BYE anyway into round two but it is highly likely that round two matches will be on outside courts with ground pass tickets only ones available for the first three and a half days.

It is a shame for the women’s event to be shelved like this for the opening few days as it boasts the biggest women’s tournament in Australia outside the Australian Open with six of the top ten and fourteen of the top twenty taking part.

Following Sydney coming off the calendar completely to accommodate for the ATP Cup which is the host city of group stage and all knockouts matches so Brisbane is now the only women’s tournament in Australia and has been disrespected with this decision making.

There has been no comment from Brisbane, WTA or ATP.
