“These courts are terrible” WTA players hit out after four injuries in a week!

The WTA Finals are in Shenzhen for the first time and offer the biggest prize money in tennis history but the court is terrible!

Slow courts and injuries have been a theme at this seasons finale with Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu, Kiki Bertens and Belinda Bencic have all retired with injuries!

Petra Kvitova has said they are too slow, Simona Halep has said playing on a slow court after a long season is tough and Belinda Bencic said following her semifinal retirement;

I think these courts are terrible for movement of players and for the muscles because it’s like sand, how you say?

The constant injuries and slow tennis have taken away from a treat event and it is a shame almost half of the players have had to pull out of the season finale.

Slow courts aren’t a major problem in tennis. It does benefit the more defensive players to utilise their skills hence how we have Elina and Ash in the final.

However when it is too slow it can cause problems.

It will slow down movement and when you do turn quick the muscles in the legs and knees will take a hit and muscle injuries are more common.

It does seem to be a theme at times in tennis with slow courts whether it is planned or next when temporary hard courts are lay especially indoors which should quicken them up as there are no external factors (wind, temperature).

It is something that will have to be looked at. This is the season finale, the best have knocked up 65-80 matches to get there for an intense week of tennis but the conditions are far from ideal.
