WTA Finals Day 4; Bianca retires but could still play ❓Svitolina qualifiers ✅ Halep & Pliskova set for Friday shootout! 👀

Day four was the second day of action for purple group and it gave us our first semi-finalist of 2019.

Defending champion Elina Svitolina is safely through to the round two extending her run of wins to eight in a row at the WTA Finals which is a remarkable effort from the Ukrainian.

She has turned up and turned the tennis on this week, it has been faultless and gutsy. She came into this with a bit of a point to prove in my opinion having not done so well against the best this year and my god she has done that.

How about this?

She was proactive against Simona Halep and it rolled nicely off her racket. There was no hanging back, it was full throttle as she won 7-5 6-3 to secure her place in the final four.

Boyfriend Gael Monfils may be in Pairs but still had a nice message for her following his win over Benoit Paire..

The second match of the day from purple group saw the two ladies who lost in their openers and needed a win to progress.

Bianca Andreescu up against Karolina Pliskova.

This was a quick encounter with the Czech number one winning 6-3 against Bianca who retired with a knee problem.

During a conversation with her coach Sylvain Bruneau in the first set they said exchanged these words;

Despite retiring from the match Bianca hasn’t officially withdrawn from the tournament yet.

She is due to have an MRI and will decide tomorrow where to play her last match against Elina Svitolina. Even if Bianca wins she cannot qualify for the semi-finals.

Sofia Kenin is the second alternate as we have already seen Kiki Bertens called up following Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal.

If another player were to drop out then an alternate would be brought in via the doubles and it would be based on highest singles ranking which will be Aryna Sabalenka.
