At just before half past eleven on Wednesday night in Paris the fate of Matteo Berrettini’s place in London was taken out of his hands.
The last player you probably want to face in this situation of ‘must win’ at this time of the season is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The good news for Berrettini is that he wasn’t the only London hopeful to have a nightmare before Halloween on a day that saw Schwartzman, Agut, Goffin and Fognini lose their chance.
Alex Zverev’s place is pretty much confirmed leaving that one spot which is held by Matteo.
Monfils, Wawrinka and De Minaur could still qualify as well as Berrettini.
The scenarios…
- De Minaur must win the title to give himself a chance
- Stan Wawrinka must make the final to give himself a chance (Nadal in R2)
- If Gael Monfils wins against Zverev or Shapovalov in the quarter finals he will qualify. Monfils has Albot in round three
Wawrinka, Monfils and De Minaur are all in action tomorrow.
