WTA Finals; Two groups, eight players, one former champion & three debutants. Who will win in Shenzhen?

The draw for the WTA Finals in Shenzhen has been complete. The top eight in women’s tennis will be battling it out beginning on Sunday for the Billie Jean King trophy, but who will win?

Red Group

Ashleigh Barty
Naomi Osaka
Petra Kvitova
Belinda Bencic

Petra Kvitova couldn’t have asked for a worse group in all honesty. All three women are in form since the US Open with Ash and Naomi meeting in an incredible final in Beijing and Belinda pulling out all the stops to qualify.

This group is going to be tough to get out of. The match I’m looking forward to the most is Naomi Osaka v Belinda Bencic and these are the two I expect to qualify.

Osaka won in Osaka and Beijing following New York and Ash found some good form too. Belinda Bencic lost to Petra Kvitova a few weeks back so it will be interesting how things pan out but the Swiss star is in very good form.

Purple Group

Bianca Andreescu
Karolina Pliskova
Simona Halep
Elina Svitolina

Favourite to qualify is Bianca Andreescu? I think so.

Kind of feels like the point to prove group. I think there is great pressure on Pliskova, Halep and Svitolina to qualify for the semi-finals.

Halep got injured in Wuhan and went to Beijing still not physically fine and hasn’t played since so there is some rustiness there.

Pliskova and Svitolina have had good but inconsistent seasons. Pliskova’s season has fizzled out but I wouldn’t rule her out of putting up a challenge.

Svitolina has had a better year at the majors but her problem has been defeating the best in the game. There is no place to hide at the WTA Finals.

Elina is of course the defending champion and only previous winner of the event so does have a lot of pressure on her.

My picks from purple group? Bianca Andreescu and Simona Halep.
