David Goffin is a man who falls under the radar.
He is one of the most underrated competitors on the tour who has turned around his season in very good fashion.
David has been ridiculously unlucky in past years with bizarre injuries. He missed a chunk of tennis after going over the cover at Roland Garros and of course that ball to the eye incident in Rotterdam.
This year he’s played a full calendar and the first five/six months were flat in all honesty.
He finished his run at Roland Garros where he made the third round with 14 wins and 14 defeats in 28 matches.
In June he found himself down at 33 in the world and dreams of qualifying for London were way off.
10th of June he was ranked 33 in the world and 43 in the race to London.
Right now, he is top 15 in the world and a few points off being in a spot for London up to 9th in the race. On Thursday 250 points separate 11th and 7th, it’s nothing right now!
I said during Wimbledon he looked back and I’m so pleased to see him playing well again.
Earlier on I said he won 14 of his first 28 to begin the year. Since Roland Garros he has won 21 of his last 30 matches and is bang in-form right now with his run in Tokyo ending in semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic.
I’ve always liked his game, he has one of the best all-court games on the tour without a doubt. He is so underrated its frustrating because he has the weapons.
I always learned to play with a right handed two-handed backhand despite being left handed and I love watching the likes of Murray and Djokovic hit there’s but Goffin for me is outstanding too.
He may be under the radar but right now he is very close to a place in London at the World Tour Finals.
