Casper Ruud leads Norway into Davis Cup Play-Off’s

NextGen star Casper Ruud has led his country into the play-offs of the Davis Cup.

The 20 year old from Norway spends a lot of his time at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca and I had the pleasure of seeing him in Madrid qualifiers earlier this year.

His game stood out to me as someone who could go far in the game. Roger Federer said after their meeting at Roland Garros he will be top 50 and hopefully top 20 in the future.

His game his built on his strong inside out forehand which gives him a lot of options as shown below in a recent video for the ATP;

Not only was it his forehand that did a lot of the talking in Davis Cup but the strength on serve as well.

His serving numbers for the year which have been his more exposed year on the main tour have been good. 71% behind the first and 51% behind the second serve won this year. 63% of BP’s saved and 80% of service games won.

Overall good numbers and we saw this in action in Davis Cup.

6-1 6-0 in his first match. 15 second serves, all in and an impressive 13/15 points won.

6-3 6-2 in his second match. 17/18 second serves in (1 DF) and an impressive 13/18 points won.

Good numbers against lesser opponents but still a good block to work from. The only concern at a higher level is people will penetrate the backhand and needs to find some cheap points. 106 aces to 105 double faults this year.

Overall a very good weekend for Ruud and Norway which included a doubles win as well staring the 20 year old who is set for Milan at the end of season and will fascinating to see him play against the other NextGen stars.

3-1 was the scoreline for Norway to go through to next years play-offs again and was the scoreline as well for the club he is a bit supporter of, Liverpool as they saw off Newcastle with a 3-1 victory to extend their lead at the top of the table to five points.
