Wimbledon; Middle Monday Preview

On Monday, 16 men and 16 women will battle for a place in the quarter finals. 32 will become 16 but who will be the final eight on both the men’s a women side?

Women’s Bottom Half

Maybe looking ahead but a guarantee is that we will have a first time Wimbledon finalist! In the bottom half of the draw we have;

Elina Svitolina v Petra Martic
Karolina Muchova v Karolina Pliskova
Simona Halep v Coco Gauff
Shuai Zheng v Dayana Yastremska

No of the eight players have been to a Wimbledon and now one will.

But first, we have a few matches to go through.

Elina Svitolina is lucky to still be in the draw. The Ukrainian was not too far away from going home against Gaspayran before she had to retire due to injury. She battled past Maria Sakkari but the in-form Petra Martic will be a great challenge, I do think we will see Petra in the quarter finals.

Pliskova has never been past round four, so a good time for it! Fellow Czech Muchova has had a good tournament so I’d expect a good challenge but this is now a real opportunity for Karolina who will take loads of confidence from her Eastbourne win and performances so far.

Simona Halep doesn’t needs this. With respect she would have taken Hercog. The crowd will be so behind the American and the way she plays will cause big issues for Halep who will have to continue her good form here to advance to the next round.

Zhang or Yastremska? Difficult one to call. The 19 year old from Ukraine has been impressive this year, I liked what she did against Sofia Kenin but Zhang has more weapons.

Men’s Top Half

In the top half of the men’s draw we have;

Novak Djokovic v Ugo Humbert
David Goffin v Fernando Verdasco
Guido Pella v Milos Raonic
Roberto Bautista Agut v Benoit Paire

I expect Ugo to go all out but against Djokovic I just cannot see it. We saw Hurkacz push him well for a couple of sets but then the number one just changed gear and rolled through.

Goffin and Raonic have some interesting battles but I am expecting both players to come through. I am surprised a little that Raonic is here as a lack of tennis this year but he has found his game well so far.

Agut v Paire?

Anyone’s guest isn’t it. I expect five sets and I just have this feeling this isn’t the end of Benoit Paire at Wimbledon for this year.

Women’s Top Half

The top half of the women’s draw includes…

Ash Barty v Alison Riske
Serena Williams v Carla Suarez Navarro
Barbora Strycova v Elise Mertens
Johanna Konta v Petra Kvitova

Ash Barty is on a 15 match winning streak but the Rosmalen champ Alison Riske will be a risky opponent for the world number one. Alison has already seen off Donna Vekic and Belinda Bencic from a set down this week.

Serena v Carla. Serena has never dropped a set v Carla, I can only see one winner here!

Barbora v Elise? Tough one, Elise goes under the radar a little bit but at the same time we know what Barbora can bring to the court and always has a good say on grass but I do expect the Belgian to have too much here.

Konta v Kvitova? What a comeback from Jo to see off Sloane for the fourth time this year! Kvitova who comes in here with no warm-up has looked good without a blip, yet! Is it coming here? Definitely both players toughest test so far.

Men’s Bottom Half

In the bottom half we have…

Sam Querrey v Tennys Sandgren
Joao Sousa v Rafael Nadal
Kei Nishikori v Mikhail Kukushkin
Matteo Berrettini v Roger Federer

A really interesting bottom half of the men’s draw.

Sam Querrey recently back from injury I imagine and hope should have too much for Sandgren in this match-up.

Sousa v Nadal will be an interesting watch. Sousa’s work ethic at the back of the court v Evans was exceptional but at the same time will Joao have enough to test Rafa? Jo and Nick couldn’t…

Kei v Mikhail? Kei has done good to get here but I don’t see it going too far from here. Quarter finals look likely but then Federer in semi-finals. He has looked sharp but he hasn’t had a top 10 win this year.

Federer v Berrettini. Should be a good battle. Matteo has had an incredible season so far and that comeback against Schwartzman was impressive too. Federer yet to be tested, but this will be the first test!
