Big battles on Day 3 at Wimbledon 💪🏻🎾

It’s been a great the day at Wimbledon, some of the best have gone home and others have had to work incredible hard to battle their way through to the third round on Friday.

Reilly Opelka 7-5 3-6 4-6 6-4 8-6 Stan Wawrinka

Reilly’s biggest win of his career out on Court 2 this morning. The American who is ranked around 60 in the world and doesn’t have much tour experience is now into the third round of a major for the first time.

I liked the composure Reilly showed. He has that big serve but to also withstand the pressure from Stan late especially after going two sets to one down I was surprised to see him see it through. When he got an opportunity he took it and now has a third round on Friday to look forward to!

Simona Halep 6-4 3-6 6-2 Mihaela Buzarnescu

Big from Halep. This was going to be tough. First time in 11 years she had played fellow Romanian Buzarnescu and her countrywoman as expected forced her to bring her best.

Going forward, it has to be much better from Halep but a big positive I saw. In her first match and today there was that slump and she recovered in two sets on Monday but in that third together mentally she looked locked in.

Haven’t seen that grit for a while but the way she covered the court and her ground strokes in the third were exceptional.

Daniil Medvedev 6-7 6-1 6-4 6-4 Alexei Popyrin

Shame for Alexei’s run to come to an end. I thought he gave a very good account of himself. The level he showed in the first set is something to build on. There was a slip in the second and Daniil will pounce and the problem when he pounces is getting back involved.

Daniil was locked in and had to be as Popyrin just didn’t go away and the one break of serve in the third and fourth was enough for the Russian who is having a good grass court season following his slip up after Barcelona.

Dayana Yastremska 7-5 4-6 6-3 Sofia Kenin

Yastremska is one to watch.

She recently turned 19 and is tipped to go far. I saw her in Birmingham, she showed glimpses of how great she can be in the future. The match I saw she lost to Julia Georges but this win today was big.

Sofia Kenin is a rough opponent early on in a draw and it was one of the matches of the day. You see these two go toe to toe and even early in the third it was super tough to call where this would go.

Next up for the teenager is Golubic for a place in the fourth round and I see no reason why she couldn’t get there.

Thomas Fabbiano 6-3 6-7 6-3 6-7 6-4 Ivo Karlovic

The man who saw off Stefanos Tsitsipas has now seen off the big serving Ivo Karlovic.

Obviously there would only be one winner in the tie-breaks but the Italian who at 30 years old is back in the third round of Wimbledon for the second year running and second time this year.

He has that grit and won’t go away and against someone like Ivo who is tough to break down on serve.

Karen Khachanov 4-6 6-4 7-5 6-4 Feliciano Lopez

The adopted Brit Feliciano Lopez’ run has come to an end.

Up a set and a break was the Spaniard against the 23 year old who has started to find some form of late this year. It was entertaining and fun especially the final game of the match with break points and match points alike.

Khachanov under the radar once again but this win was big hanging in there at times and having majority of the crowd on Feli’s side to.

Fernando Verdasco 4-6 4-6 7-6 6-3 6-4 Kyle Edmund

The upset of the day.

Kyle was up two sets and 3-0 on the Spaniard but seemed to be in dis-comfort. We had the trainer and doctor on but Kyle maintained at a competitive level but falling a break behind was too much for the Brit who just couldn’t find a way back in.

A shame for Kyle who has struggled with injuries and getting back to form this year but once again Fernando Verdasco has come from two sets down to win in five in his career.
