Dominic Thiem 6-2 3-6 7-5 5-7 7-5 Novak Djokovic

A match that has began almost 24 hours ago has finally come to an end.

We have had rain, wind, flying umbrella’s, unhappy Novak Djokovic and a bizarre cancellation of play but we now know our final line-up.

Dominic Thiem will be taking on Rafael Nadal for the second consecutive year in the final.

I don’t even know where to begin. I think the frustrations of Novak Djokovic ultimately cost at points during the match getting involved in stuff he didn’t need to get involved in. Dominic Thiem despite this and the weather conditions remained so focused and credit to him for that.

I liked what I saw from Dominic Thiem, his game has come on so much and isn’t as erratic anymore. He will naturally hit more unforced errors in these big matches when it goes to four or five sets but he can balance it out with winners.

He utilised the drop shot well with and against the wind but also mixed up his serve well and decided to move around from the kick out-wide when playing into the wind and it worked well for him.

Things did get a little bit tricky for Thiem serving for the match at 5-4. The Austrian was up 40-15 on serve with two match points before Novak reeled off four points in a row to level at 5-5.

The next hold of serve was big for Thiem who got it quite comfortably before he orchestrated another match point on the Djokovic serve which he took!
