Sit up and take notice.
If a final at Roland Garros wasn’t enough to convince you last year then a title in Barcelona has really got people talking following a stunning week of tennis for Thiem.
Dominic Thiem’s week panned out like this;
Diego Schwartzman – 6-3 6-3
Jaume Munar – 7-5 6-1
Guido Pella – 7-5 6-2
Rafael Nadal – 6-4 6-4
Daniil Medvedev – 6-3 6-0
All inform and tricky opponents and without a set dropped and to get to those latter stages of the sets against Munar and Pella and then striking shows how focused he is and in the second sets he hasn’t looked back.
Even more impressive is the finer details in the wins.
He found himself down 0-40 whilst serving for the match against Rafa which was the first break points of the match the Spaniard saw but Dominic saved them all so cooly!
Also in the final against Daniil he found himself down 0-3 before reeling off 12 of the next 13 games as he picked up his 13th career title and his first at Barcelona.
These next few weeks will be fascinating and the inconsistencies Dominic has on hard courts are still there but you cannot say on a clay court he is a different animal.
I’m excited to see what happens at Madrid and Rome ahead of Roland Garros as if Dominic continues to be focused and fit then he will take some stopping.
I think it’s time to sit up and notice, I think we are now past that stage of him being a challenge on the clay but a serious contender during this time of the season and we have also seen his hard court tennis improve with the title at Indian Wells but still has those bizarre defeats.
