Victoria Azarenka is smiling!
The Belarussian who has had a long week with Fed Cup as well in Brisbane last week has been in such good form once again in Stuttgart.
Vika was due to play against Garbine Muguruza in round one but the Spaniard’s injury and subsequent withdrawal from the tournament meant there was a shuffle up.
In her first round match she was up against Vera Zvonareva who she saw off 7-5 6-4 setting up a round two match with fourth seed and defending champion Karolina Pliskova.
It was the Czech number two who got the first break at the end of the first set following some sloppy tennis at the net from the Belarussian who ended up being passed at the net as Pliskova took a 6-4 lead.
Vika’s reaction was perfect. Her determination can be completely unmatched on a tennis court and we saw this as she produced a stunning performance in a hard-thought come back against the defending champion.
Vika did just go for it, her tennis was superb and the backhand really did cause Pliskova problems and the former world number one was going to be a tough one to break down as she was just so solid.
Next up for Vika is a match tonight against Anett Kontaveit which will be an interesting battle. Anett has been in good form of late especially since Indian Wells and was also spotted at Wimbledon hitting with Andy Murray on the green clay last week.
