The quarter finals are set.
It was another day of stunning clay court tennis in Monaco as 16 became 8 as the first clay Masters event of the season delivered once again.
Djokovic 6-3 6-0 Fritz
A very good performance from Novak, once he got going he really got in the groove and began to impose and look confident on the court. That win previously against Kohlschreiber has done him major favours as he looks ahead to his quarter final match against a difficult Medvedev.
Nadal 6-4 6-1 Dimitrov
Another good performance from Rafa, backing up his 6-1 6-1 against Agut with another solid performance and he hasn’t looked this sharp since Melbourne.
Dimitrov also deserves credit but could only stay competing with Rafa for the first set until the Spaniard really turned on the style and it became a formality for the 11 time former champion.
Thiem, Tsitsipas & Zverev
These three will be leaving Monte-Carlo thinking what could have been?
Dominic Thiem was flat and pretty uninspiring and is something I will take a closer look at going forward. Stefanos Tsitsipas was completely wild in his three set defeat against Medvedev. The Australian Open semi-finalist looked like he was playing with the weight of the world on his shoulders and Sascha Zverev once again was likewise flat and lacking any fizz in his game.
Usually falls under the radar but his performance against Tsitsipas was calm and composed.
I feel with Daniil you know what you are going to get but he does it so well that stopping him can be a big problem. Things did get a bit messy in the second set but re-grouped well in the third and continued to keep that extra ball in play and leeched off the errors coming from Tsitsipas’ racket.
Another very good performance from the Croat. He has really kicked on of late and looks comfortable.
Quarter finals in Monte-Carlo now means he has made it to back to back quarter finals at Masters 1000 level and is giving us something to think about.
Quarter Finals are;
Dusan Lajovic v Lorenzo Sonego
Novak Djokovic v Daniil Medvedev
Guido Pella v Rafael Nadal
Borna Coric v Fabio Fognini
