The beginning of the clay court season has begun for some but for others it was the last week on the hard courts which brought plenty of opportunities. Some players have played well up to now and some haven’t kicked off their season at all but following a week in Charleston and Monterrey respectively the conversation has really kicked off for Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys, Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka and Garbine Muguruza.
A good week for Caro, the clay has never been a favourite of the Dane but with Francesca on side she has really pulled it all together and looked so much more comfortable on the surface. The is more to do a little bit more aggression to unlock in her game but this run here in Charleston can only help her.
Unexpected title winner in Charleston. Apart from her R4 run in Melbourne nothing has happened. Her game looked solid and it was one of them weeks where Madison really shows us what she can do.
The next stage is now taking that to another level and finding some momentum which has been missing in her career which has been stop/start.
Sloane gave us the highlight of the week when she said she was ‘tired of f*****g losing’ but despite semi-final defeat to her good friend and eventual champion Madison Keys it was a good week for the former major champion.
Title defended but no top 40 players faced but wins against Rybarikova, Mladenovic and of course Vika sealed the win for her.
This is a good week but it can’t be a season highlight if I’m honest, now it is time to push on. She looked impressive and focused and lets hope she can keep it going.
A sad ending for Vika 😦
Injured but she deserves great plaudits. She performed so well throughout the week and some time off before Fed Cup should help that calf problem but she can take away positives from this week!
This is more than a quest for wins and titles but a personal journey and she is simply inspirational and I cannot wait for the next chapter!
