The first week is over and what a week it has been. Players have surprised, disappointed, entertained and some have work to do… what caught my eye during the first week at Flushing Meadows?
The greatest hug in tennis
These two meeting was one hell of a story. Serena and Venus back in New York and what a win it was for Serena but also a celebration of these two great players and the memories they have brought and continue to create during the last 20 years.
Karen and Alex impress!
Two big stories in New York. Youngsters Karen Kachanov and Alex De Minaur impressed me the most throughout their stays in New York. In their respective defeats to Nadal and Cilic both can walk away with their heads held high, they were superb! Well done guys!
Big thumbs up for him! Down two sets to Nadal many would just roll over and take it but he just went for it! Toe to toe with the world number one forcing a fourth set and even going down a break in that set fought back but couldn’t hold on but what a great attitude he showed !
Madison and Sloane in business!
Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens are playing with some freedom. Back in the quarter finals here how far could they go?
They look like they mean business, few nerves early on but right now looked locked in at another major!
I’m sure the likes of Wozniacki, Kvitova, Halep and Muguruza are probably having a think of where it went wrong and in the case of some the next challenge is how to save their season?
Form of Kvitova has fallen flat since Birmingham, Muguruza hasn’t got going. Wozniacki has had an up and down season and Halep is lacking consistency.
What next? We will see!
The performances of Osaka, Sasnovich, Sabalenka and Vondrousova to the courts in New York have been a refreshing surprise! None of us expected too much from them but they have done so well and impressed with their game styles with Osaka in her first major QF!
