By no stretch of the imagination was Rafael Nadal at his best during this week in Toronto but the world number one has assured us of his hard court powers ahead of the US Open with wins against Paire, Wawrinka, Cilic, Kachanov and Tsitsipas.
Rafa should and will take plenty of positives from this match and the tournament. There will be things he will be looking at improving on and now has a big turn around with a 48 hour switch up to now get on site in Cincinnati and will play Tuesday night.
Tactically Nadal got it spot on, he went big into Tsitsipas’ backhand which has been so dangerous all week but as he went big into it he couldn’t hit the winners and only hit one all match.
It’s funny how we think differently. If this was clay it be a shoe in that Nadal would win the upcoming major but I still feel something is missing.
