Petra Kvitova; Race to be fit! Wimbledon favourite?

Following her win in Birmingham and becoming the first player to win a title on the three surfaces this year it be fair to say Petra Kvitova is favourite for the Wimbledon title.

Petra has won Wimbledon on two previous occasions in 2011 and 2014 but since her last victory there she has won four matches in three years not making it past the third round.

However… this has now been thrown into doubt.

News broke in the morning that Petra has had to withdraw from Eastbourne where she was due to play Agnieszka Radwanska with a hamstring injury.

Later this morning Petra did release a statement;

“I’m really disappointed to have to withdraw from Eastbourne this morning. I felt my hamstring in the Birmingham final and although I played with tape in my match here yesterday, when I woke up this morning it felt worse.

With Wimbledon around the corner I couldn’t take the risk of making it worse by playing today. I am so sorry to the fans here in Eastbourne who won’t get to me play but I hope to be back at this beautiful event next year”

The admission from Petra that she felt the hamstring in Birmingham in her final win against Rybarikova but still went to Eastbourne is an odd one as a hamstring injury of any type is not something you can flirt with. It can feel tight then fine but we’ve seen in sport how you can just tear it quickly!

The goal is now Wimbledon, I expect Petra and her team thought about priorities and although a run in Eastbourne would be nice the thought process has to be all eyes on Wimbledon where she is considered favourite and has just under a week to be fit and could play on Monday.
