Simona Halep has survived her opening round match in Stuttgart but only just! The world number took the long route to victory against Magdalena Rybarikova with her match finishing just before 11pm last night.
Simona Halep is no stranger to having to fight in matches but since Melbourne her form has bene a bit patchy and at Indian Wells and Miami this match she would have lost but she found a way to keep going and keep that rhythm.
Halep’s main strength especially on a clay court where the conditions allow defensive counter-punches to stay in the point is her ability to break opponents down.
Halep after the match looked over to her box with a look of ‘job done’ no smile or frustration but she knows she doesn’t have to be at her very best on clay to get the win which is a credit to her ability and athleticism to stay in the point.
After the match the world number one said she kept missing in set two and she had to find rhythm and sometimes just getting the ball in play is a massive start to that and working point by point which is what the Romanian did.
Of course Halep would have liked to have won hassle free but it does set a tone of tough to beat, she has a day off today so time is there to rest and practice before her quarter final match tomorrow.
