If I turned up to a tournament and were told my first round opponent would be Angie Kerber I wouldn’t full unpack my bags. The former world number one had a write off year last year but looks in the mood this year and she showed it here in round one.
A round one opponent in Petra Kvitova is never an easy start but the German who lost to Kvitova on this court the other day in Fed Cup returned the favour with a patient and clever performance booking her place in the next round.
I was impressed with Kerber so much, she doesn’t always have to go for it and that is a complement to her and her opponent but her patience and grit from the back of the court is admirable.
Over the next few weeks I have her as a major contender, I think if she continues this form over the next few weeks she will be a favourite in Paris.
The way she defends, works the point and makes you hit that extra ball is so good to watch and is difficult to break down on this surface.
