Konta finds her much needed top gear as Miami defence continues!

2018 has been tricky for Johanna Konta but her third round match against Elise Mertens was anything but. The Brit had only won back to back matches twice this year coming into her title defence here in Miami and was up against a player who made the semi-finals in Melbourne but had struggled of late.

The beginning of the match took a while to get going, service games were a bit messy especially from the Belgian who continued to hit double faults. Mertens hit 6 double faults in the whole match and all of which were in the first 5 games of the first set.

Konta found a break before at 2-1 before being immediately pegged back for 2-2 but I didn’t expect Jo to go on to win 10 of the next 11 games to seal a 6-2 6-1 win.

Once Jo started to go up the gears the confidence oozed especially in the second set where she ran the show. She served well and used the T serve and the kicker out wide to good effect to win some cheap points and keep herself on the front foot.

Likewise with the backhand she found that needed rhythm to give her that much needed momentum going into the next round as she continues to try to defend her title.
