Don’t doubt the talent of Nick Kyrgios. The Australian has defeated Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in their first respective meetings on the tour and can now add Novak Djokovic to that list.
There have been times when Nick’s commitment on and off the court has been questioned but the way he composed himself on court and what I loved was the way he bounced around the court after winning the first set, this is the actions of a player who cares.
You cannot take anything away from Kyrgios. Of course question marks will be asked of Novak and rightly so, decision making on big points was surprisingly off.
The first really big one came in the first set tie-break at 9-9. Nick lined up the swinging serve out-wide and Novak’s court position is simply bizarre!
I sometimes have talked about under committing and it was something I brought up recently in Melbourne when Osaka took on Konta and just couldn’t make a decision on the return and on such a big point is unusual.
Late on in the second set we saw that nervous ending from Novak with a couple of bad serves and then a wild forehand wide from the Serbian gave Kyrgios match points which he took immediately breaking the former world number one to love to seal another big win!
