Thiem triumphed in Rio but now must continue his form in Acapulco

Last week Dominic Thiem won his 8th career title in Rio now the Austrian travels from Brazil to Acapulco before a trip to Indian Wells as he aims to make an impact in a tournament full of some of the games biggest and brightest names but is success more important in Acapulco than in Rio?

Thiem is a top 10 player, this isn’t up for debate but what is up for debate is the tournament selection. Everyone wants to win week in week out but when you are a top player I think chosing tournaments becomes a big priority, to be honest winning Rio in all honesty and with respect is a good achievement but not the toughest of challenges and an early exit sets you up for criticism so if anything sets more pressure.

This week it get’s tougher. The playing field has future stars in and players like Nadal, Djokovic and Del Potro these are the sort of players you have to beat to build on the ranking even more, you cant continue to play 250 tournaments every week as it will win matches and titles but doesn’t prepare you for the next level which is why picking tournaments wisely is key.

Thiem has a tough beginning to Acapulco against Gilles Simon in round one so it doesn’t get easier from here. Thiem has defeated Gilles in their last three meetings and has defeated him this year but a good run here is vital to show he can match the best.
