Karolina Pliskova cruised through round one and two winning 6-2 6-0 and 6-0 6-2 but against Jelena Ostapenko had more of a fight on her hands to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career.
The Czech star is my one to watch and as the days move on I just have a feeling that she could finish with the title in her hands. Bigger tests will follow but right now she is looking good and just edged the Latvian 10-8 in the final set to secure the win.
I said tougher matches will follow for the former US Open finalist and you could look quite far ahead to the semi-final where she could play either Johanna Konta or Serena Williams.
But a bit closer to time is a meeting against the energetic Daria Gavrilova who’s explosive performances and personality has got the home crowd behind her and that could be quite intimidating for Pliskova. Gavrilova will ask questions and maybe get frustrated but she has to look to take Pliskova off the baseline and take time away from her.
It will be intimidating, the majority of the crowd will be routing for Gavrilova but we are talking about a woman who defeated Serena Williams in the semi-finals of the US Open last year which is a massive achievement.
So far Karolina has cruised and fought but many challenges lie ahead!
