Preparations for Melbourne have been halted for three of the top ten players in the world as former world number ones Serena and Venus Williams both exited Auckland in round two whereas similar fate followed for Simona Halep in Shenzhen as her preparations also hit a bump in the road.
Venus Williams unfortunately had to withdraw from her match today with an arm injury on a day where would have had to play twice but should be fit for the Australian Open which begins in just under two week’s time.
The surprise of the day was the defeat of Serena Williams who fell in three sets to Madison Brengle. The world number two was looking to gather some momentum before the first major of the season but her run in Auckland has come to a quick end after an early defeat as she looks to try and reach the top once again.
The final big surprise of the day on the WTA tour was the early exit of Simona Halep who just lacked consistency against Katerina Siniakova in Shenzhen bringing her tournament to an end with a lack of control in rallies which is something we saw in Halep’s round one encounter with Jelena Jankovic but managed to come through in that match.
