Pressure has affected so many. This year we saw Novak Djokovic, Garbine Muguruza and Monica Puig suffer from pressure and their level dropped after reaching career high moments however for Dominika Cibulkova her season ended on top of the world as the champion in Singapore so next stop will be Melbourne and I think she can deal with the pressure and will be one to watch in 2017.
Domi is such an explosive and emotional player. She doesn’t leave anything in the locker room, she does her talking on the court and her performances in Singapore were perfect.
Just a few years ago the Slovakian was in the final of the Australian Open but was defeated by Li Na and in 2015 had a torrid season with injuries but in 2016 really pulled it out of the bag to go from outside top 50 to 5 in the world.
Her personality is infectious and I believe it does help her tennis, you know when she is on the court she just gives it her all and you can’t ask for much more!
Painting the lines
My type of tennis is effective with an element of risk and innovation to it. You see this in Domi’s game and her shot placement in Singapore was like playing a video, you couldn’t fault it.
Look at the shot placement match against Simona Halep. The variation is mad, she is hitting everyone but look how much she flirted with the lines but did it and got the rewards as well.
Against the world number one it was more targeted towards the backhand of Kerber which is her weaker of the two shots and it’s difficult for her to attack from a standing position off it and dictate Cibulkova around the court we did see that backhand flicked up the line a couple of times but not enough to prevent Cibulkova targeting that corner.
Go big or go home!
It’s a dangerous way to play but it worked in Singapore and for a majority of 2016 hence her rise up the rankings. When it works it’s good but when you start missing it is tough to watch! I think Domi will deal with pressure well having been towards the top before and I can see her thriving in Melbourne and who knows what might happen in about 6 weeks time…
