It certainly wasn’t the best contest but at the end of the day it was another win to the name of Andy Murray as the world number one ended Day 2 on top of the group announcing his arrival at the World Tour Finals but it wasn’t all plain sailing!
Marin Cilic got the first opportunity in the match to break in the very first game with Andy 15-40 down on serve but to his credit held serve and then broke the Croat to take a 2-0 before surrendering the early lead. After sharing some breaks early on it was Andy who edged ahead at 4-1 despite to be honest not playing at a level we know he can. His second serve was just all over the place with four double faults in set one and wild errors off the forehand from both Andy and Marin in a first set that was dominated by errors with 31 shared between the two and only just 7 winners but Murray took it 6-3.
During the second set Murray started to find his feet more and throughout the match kept Cilic where he wanted utilising the low bounce of the ball on the court using the backhand slice and began to find that cross-court forehand which Cilic had no answer for as Murray went up an early break and continued to get better and better securing his first win of the tournament in 90 minutes with a satisfying 6-3 6-2 win against the 7th seed.
