For Simona Halep her opening round match against Madison Keys could not have gone better! The Romanian put on a masterclass in her epic victory against the powerful Madison Keys who just couldn’t get the better of the former French Open finalist.
I couldn’t really believe what I was watching, this is a part of Madison’s game which needs the most improvement.
We know Madison’s first serve is a massive weapon but this second serve needs more bite. It comes in with a lot of bounce and despite the shortness of the serve Halep didn’t go gung-ho and push far into the court but remained conservative and composed but in control.
It’s time for my favourite word. Modern tennis relies on variation and adapting to situations and I think that is where Halep has picked up her season by finding that variation again and it couldn’t have been better against Keys.
Seriously it could not have better. Halep peppered the backhand side of Keys width depth and power denying her the chance to run around the backhand to flick the forehand cross court or up the line.
Mixing it up with drop shots and different angles. As well as playing to your strengths you have to play to your opponent’s weakness and the longer the rallies went on it favoured Halep.
