Former world number one Rafael Nadal has called time on his season. For the second year running the Spaniard has ended without a Grand Slam title to his name. It’s been 28 months since he lifted that last Roland Garros title in 2014 and will we see him lift another major honour?
Nadal has struggled throughout the season with injuries and this wrist injury seems to have been an issue for quite a while and the former world number one announced via Facebook he has decided to call time on his season.
Nadal took to Facebook to say this:
It is no secret that I arrived to the Olympic Games short of preparation and not fully recovered, but the goal was to compete and win a medal for Spain. This forced recovery has caused me pain since then and now I am forced to stop and start preparing the 2017 season. I am very saddened for not being able to play next week in Basel since I have a great memory of the tournament and the final played against Roger Federer last year. I won’t be able to compete either in Paris-Ber…cy, where the crowds and the FFT staff have always treated me so well. Now it is time to rest and start preparing intensively the 2017 season.
You could see the determination in his game in Rio to do well and the emotion he showed on court magnified this but it didn’t work out for him.
This does mean that Nadal will be missing the ATP 500 in Basel in the coming weeks following that the final Masters 1000 event of the year in Paris and of course the World Tour Finals in London.
