Frenchman Lucas Pouille’ year keeps on getting better. The 22 year old today won his first ATP title as he dispatched Dominic Thiem 7-6 6-2 to claim his first title in-front of a home crowd.
There are moments in matches where momentum can swing and that first set tie-break could have gone badly for Lucas but he recovered against the odds. Thiem went 4-0 up in the tie-breaker and then lost 7 of the next 8 points as the Frenchman took it 7-5 against the impressive Austrian!
This win propels him to about 16 in the world on the rankings come Monday, London is a slight possibility and I have to be honest I never saw this type of run coming.
I watched Lucas play Nadal in Monte-Carlo last year and to be honest I didn’t get it. It started off all or nothing and quickly tired himself out and in main draws finished with a win/loss record of 12/14 for the year.
His win loss to date is now 30/18 with a career one of 45-40 and to be on the verge of the top 15 is a great achievement! If you watch his match v Nadal in Monte-Carlo last year and in New York not long ago the difference is massive and credit to him for that improvement!
