Simona Haleps good form continues on tour with after overcoming an early test against a low ranked Lucie Safarova. The 5th seed came into Flushing Meadows with just 3 defeats since Roland Garros and seems to be finding that bite again on the tour which made her such a dangerous opponent back in 2014.
Halep started excellently against the fellow former French Open finalist taking the first three games but surprisingly the intensity level dropped from Halep but to her credit she remained competitive and had that edge on Safarova in the rallies.
An issue I’ve found watching Halep a few times this year is when she isn’t at her best she struggles to find a way of winning but she looked good throughout and it felt like the game was on her racket throughout the match.
Haleps name will be thrown about as a potential contender but it’s about taking it one match at a time.
Halep in her post match interview seems to have her feet on the ground, she said she enjoyed playing under the roof as it was similar to indoor but it was a bit too cold with the air conditioning on.
Halep looked confident throughout and like I say it’s about taking opportunities and so far it’s 2/2 for the Romanian
