Injury concerns and poor form has halted Lucie Safarova this year. The 2015 French Open finalist is ranked down at 44 in the world coming into flushing meadows meaning she is unseeded and will meet world number five Simona Halep in round two which is set to be a blockbuster of a match.
To have a match between two very good players this early is a treat but at the same time a shame that one of them will be leaving the competition early. Progressing to round two for Lucie secured her 400th win on the tour but just her 14th of the year and against Halep you won’t get an easy ride.
Halep has the edge going into this one but it won’t be easy. The Romanian has struggled at times for consistency but is starting to look like the player who make the final of the French Open in 2014 and having won the last three matches against Safarova it’s tough to look past the Romainian.
One thing Simona makes you do a lot of is running and when her game is at the highest level she paints the side lines of the court better than anyone on the tour and for Safarova who has only played 27 matches this season may be in for a bit of a marathon.
You’d have to put Halep’s name in a list of contenders, I don’t think there is clear favourite to win the title and these are those tough early matches a player of Halep’s quality should be winning.
